Sore Throat and Tonsillitis (Child) [English] Public
The tonsils are small pieces of tissue at the back of the mouth, on either side of the tongue. The tonsils are a part of the body's defensive lymphatic system. They help fight germs that cause infection and prevent you from getting sick. Tonsillitis occurs when the tonsils become infected and inflamed. It is very common in children and occurs most often in children aged two to 15 years. The germs that cause tonsillitis, like most germs that cause respiratory infections, can be contagious (spread easily). Some germs are more contagious than others. When the tonsils become inflamed, the adenoids, another part of the lymphatic system, may also become inflamed. The adenoids are lumps of tissue behind the nose, and cannot be seen when looking in the mouth. Lymph nodes (sometimes called "lymph glands") are also a part of the lymphatic system.
