This pamphlet provides a brief description of the medical imaging procedure paracentesis including information on who will be performing procedure?, prior to procedure instructions, what happens during procedure?, will it hurt?, how long it will take?, risks or complications, what happens afterwards?, follow-up instructions and information on who to contact if experiencing problems. Paracentesis is the removal of fluid from around the organs in your abdomen. This area is called the abdominal cavity. A build-up of fluid in the abdominal cavity is called ascites.
