Pain Relief: Comfort Kit (Child) [English] Permalink Public
It is understood that kids have pain, especially while in the hospital. When kids are actively engaged in a fun activity, their pain and anxiety goes down. Pain might be due to procedures or treatments, or from their illness or injury. How children cope with pain is different for each of them. Some kids will not talk about their pain, while others will cry and yell. This page describes ways parents can help their child reduce pain using play and imagination. These methods will work in the hospital or at home. These strategies for easing pain work well with pain medication your child may need. Talk to your child's nurse, child life specialist, or social worker for more ideas. The toys in the following list may help. Children are encouraged to make choices about what may work best for them to reduce pain. (English)

Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus - MRSA (Child) [English] Permalink Public
MRSA is a type of bacteria (germ). MRSA stands for "methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus." Staphylococcus aureus is often shortened to Staph. aureus. Staph. aureus is a germ that is often found on the skin. It does not usually make people ill. When Staph. aureus does cause an infection, it usually affects the skin. It can cause boils, infected cuts, and other skin infections. MRSA is a special type of Staph. aureus. It is resistant to many antibiotics, including methicillin. This means that methicillin and some other antibiotics do not get rid of MRSA if you take them. Audio available. (English)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a way of taking pictures of the inside of the body without X-rays. MRI uses a strong magnet to make the pictures. This is called an MRI scan. An MRI scan is fairly noisy but does not hurt. A number of short MRI scans make up a complete MRI study. A complete MRI study may take as little as 30 minutes and up to 2 hours to complete. Kawasaki disease causes inflammation or swelling of the blood vessels. It affects the coronary arteries, which carry blood and oxygen to the the heart muscles. Kawasaki disease usually causes these symptoms: 5 or more days of fever red or bloodshot eyes red lips, mouth, or tongue puffy or red hands and feet rash swollen glands in the neck Kawasaki disease is a rare illness. It usually affects children under the age of 5. But older children can also be affected. We do not know what causes Kawasaki disease. There is no specific test to diagnose it. We also do not know why some children get the disease and others do not. Audio available. (English)
